Position Summary:

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Director with a strong background in cancer immunotherapy and human immune monitoring assays to form and lead a team focusing on translational research. The focus of the Translational Research Department will be to develop and perform critical immune monitoring assays with clinical specimen for mechanistic characterization of novel therapies and assessment of target engagement.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Establish and lead a new translational research laboratory with 2-3 PhD Scientists and lab technicians
  • Collaborate with internal and external research teams/CROs to establish and advance translational research capabilities at Hookipa
  • Develop immune monitoring strategies in collaboration with the biomarker team
  • Participate at target identification and project development
  • Develop in vitro/in vivo disease models within a variety of therapeutic areas
  • Oversee the development and performance of sensitive cell-based assays to measure antigen specific T cell responses (e.g. ELISpot, intracellular cytokine staining) as well as immune assays to quantify antibody and cytokine responses
  • In depths characterization of human PBMCs and tissue samples with a focus on T cells (e.g. TCRseq, scRNAseq)
  • Analysis and presentation of results to a broad audience
  • Active participation in project teams
  • Continuous evaluation of novel immune monitoring technologies


  • MD or PhD in relevant field (e.g. Medicine, Biology, Immunology)
  • Minimum of 5 years hands-on experience with cell culture, multicolor flow cytometry, immunological assays, molecular biology, human PBMC culture and gene expression analyses
  • Managerial and leadership experience ideally in a bio-pharmaceutical company
  • In depths knowledge of human immunology, cancer immunotherapy and T cell biology
  • Independent, efficient, and proactive workstyle
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, hands-on mentality, and solution-oriented
  • Motivated, flexible, team player with the ability to work under time pressure
  • Eager to build a new research team
  • Fluent in English

We are required by Austrian law to post a minimum salary. The minimum monthly gross salary of EUR 5.265,-- (based on fulltime - 40 hours per week); depending on experience and qualification salary can be negotiated. In addition, we offer a performance-related bonus payment and participation in our stock option compensation program.
