Job Description

Laboratory automation is one of the most exciting and innovative application areas for Mechatronic and Robotics. Cutting-edge technologies coming from the intersection of electrical, mechanical and computer engineering can provide competitive advantage in the life science sector. As such, pharma companies are looking into the possibilities of utilizing these technologies in various types of laboratories, where R&D represents one of the most important application fields. In our process development department at Takeda we make concepts into reality by serving as a link between discovery and manufacturing. Biological processes are our core competence, but innovative topics such as modeling (in silico development), data and computer sciences as well as automation, mechatronics and robotics are gaining more and more importance.

To this end we now have a research-oriented mobile manipulator platform, which enables us to conduct proof of concept studies and to develop new technologies. That is, now only for our own laboratory purposes, but to provide other fields in the company - such as manufacturing and supply or QC - with blueprints to roll these out.

Biological experiments often run outside working hours, when either the steps take a long time - such as incubation - or when the process is automated. Throughout this hands-off time, however, errors can still occur, in which case normally a person on standby duty is called to investigate and resolve the error. Oftentimes the resolution is as simple as restarting a device, removing a misplaced sample plate, or changing a filter. To enable the on-duty personnel to diagnose and resolve the error remotely, using a mobile manipulator robot is proposed.

In this role you will:

  • Evaluate and develop remote control strategies for the mobile manipulator to enable the remote handling of mechanical errors
  • Evaluate the aspects of integration in the on-call duty (Bereitschaft) system
  • Publish your scientific results in the form of conference presentation(s) and/or journal article(s)

Your skills and background:

  • Active MSc studies in engineering, preferably Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
  • Focus on automation and robotics
  • Experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS)
  • Experience with Linux
  • Knowledge of the programming languages C, C++ and/or Python
  • Ability to work independently and a strong drive to find solutions for challenging problems
  • Full professional proficiency in English

  • Experience with augmented-, virtual- and mixed reality technologies
  • CAD skills
  • Experience with system integration and interfaces
  • Experience with software development tools, such as Git and Jira

  • Experience with Fusion 360
  • German language skills
