Get the odor: CAR enzymes for aliphatic acid modification
More than probably any other sense, smell evokes memories and aldehydes are the key ingredients for creating these moments. Bioreduction of carboxylic acids to aldehydes by Carboxylic Acid Reductases (CARs) show promising results for a more sustainable route to aldehydes.
heterologous expression of CARs in E. coli and/or Pichia pastoris
investigation of the substrate scope in vivo and in vitro
enzyme purification and characterization
The ideal master candidate studies molecular biology, biochemistry or biotechnology, has very good theoretical and practical knowledge of:
molecular biology methods (PCR, DNA extraction and purification, cloning);
bioinformatic tools (SnapGene, PyMOL)
microbiological work (cultivation, cell disruption, protein purification, SDS-PAGE)
analytical methods (HPLC and GC analysis for activity analysis)
However, knowledge of all techniques is not mandatory. Applicants should be enthusiastic to reach defined goals, be motivated to learn new techniques and present their results. This master thesis will be compensated by a FEMtech stipend to promote female students in technical fields and life science.
