The Associate Director of Business Development will be responsible for developing the Bio-Pharmaceutical (large molecule / enzymes) business. The efforts of the future position holder will primarily focus on attracting and securing suitable contract manufacturing opportunities aligned with current and future technical and operational capabilities of the company, but may include development partnering.


Main Responsibilities

  • Identify prospective customers and suitable target organizations that are most likely to have requirements aligned with the technical and operational capabilities of our client to develop, scale up, and/or manufacture large molecules / enzymes using microbial, yeast, or fungal expression systems
  • Establish new partnerships and build lasting relationships with prospective customers
  • Respond to RFPs (Requests for Proposal) and assess new ways of handling them
  • Coordinate inputs from all relevant technical and operational functional areas and the legal team
  • Develop marketing und marketing communication strategies in close cooperation with the Commercial Director and the Product Manager to promote brand awareness and recognition within the market
  • Conduct market research to help determine strategic focus within the biopharmaceutical market
  • Secure business opportunities in line with short, medium, and long term sales and profit targets
  • Build a ‘sales funnel’, assess the related risks and chances of success in winning business, and understand the expected future business losses associated with the failure of customer’s product to allow a decision on market approval and commercial success or the decision to transfer manufacturing to alternative CMOs
  • Conduct contract negotiations working closely with the legal team


Candidate Profile

  • Science Degree in a relevant subject (biology, microbiology, biotechnology, etc.)
  • Substantial business experience in a commercial role for a Bio-Pharma CMO / CDMO
  • Experienced in international business development with relevant market contacts
  • Proven track record in securing significant contract manufacturing business opportunities
  • Deep understanding of mechanisms of the contract manufacturing market (commercial terms, pricing approaches, legal terms, etc.)
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively the technical details associated with manufacture of large molecules enzymes by way of microbial fermentation and purification
  • Ability to travel up to 60%
  • Well versed in using technology, including Outlook, LinkedIn, Skype, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, to efficiently conduct business, manage time, communicate, network, analyse data, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Hands-on mentality with the desire to create future growth
  • Located in North America or a major Western European market within easy reach of an international airport
